Foot injury follow up

So I went to the Dr. yesterday for a follow up on my foot.  I waited there forever.  Seriously an hour and a half.  Basically the Dr. said that my X-rays looked great.  That my bones breaks in my bones were healed. He said the marilyn line in my foot looked perfect.  Don't ask me what that is because I don't know.  Something about an imaginary line connecting the ankle to your toes or something.  So I asked him, "why am I still limping?  Why do I feel pain with every step?  Why can't I stand for too long?"  He looked at me and said that trauma injuries such as this take time to heal.  Being that this is a foot injury, it won't be healed for 2 to 2 1/2 years.  I was like, "seriously?"  He told me that since we are on our feet all day everyday (walking, standing whatever,) it takes much more time for it to heal.  The ligaments are still healing and I will have some pain and discomfort for some time.

He said that to lessen that I could have a special orthotic made for my foot.  It's a shoe slip in for some arch support.  He told me not to wear flip flops :(  which I happened to wear for the first time in a year just yesterday.  I asked him how much the orthotic was and he said around $300.00.  Grrrr, not being able to work and being expected to pay out of pocket for something like that is just not possible.  He told me that I could get something from walgreens, but that it wouldn't work as well.  If I am still having pain in 3 months then I am going to have to get an special orthotic he says.  So last night I went into walmart and got these insoles that are supposed to be the best you can get over the counter.  They even had a machine that scans to measure your foot, how you stand on your feet, and your arch.  Based on the scan you are given a different prescription.  I used them today around the house and they are amazing.  I still am having pain, but I imagine it will get a lot better.

On a brighter note, grandpa called and asked if I wanna go out to eat for our Birthday tomorrow.  I am excited.  We didn't go last year.  Not sure why.  But since we share the same birthday since I was 14 we have always gone out to eat to celebrate.  I am glad we are going this year.  It should be fun!

The little things!

I used to have a meme (blog hop) called Fab Friday Newz, which was all about the simple things in life that bring us joy.  I haven't done a Fab Friday Newz post in about a year, but today I wanted to share a smiple joy with you.  For the first time in 5 months I got to have a shower.  It's not like I didn't shower for 5 months, LOL!  I just had to sit down.  Do you know how hard that really is???  I mean not the sitting part, but showering while you are sitting?  It's trickier than one might think.  Back to the subject at hand, today I had a real standup shower.  My foot was killing me by the end, but I made it and it was fabulous.

In the spirit of Fab Friday Newz I will share another fun tidbit with you.  The roads here got kind of icy, so I don't have to work until tomorrow.  That is exciting!   A little thing that made me oh so excited!  My boss is super understanding about bad weather.  I work about a half an hour away and anytime the weather channel predicts some sort of icy/snowy conditions we push work off a day.

Another fun thing... I got some awesome new perfume called Koi.  It's from the tattooed line by inky.  It was a steal!  I also got some new PJs for super cheap and a pair of jeans for next to nothing.  I love bargain shopping and finding great stuff for little money.  I've been sporting the perfume everyday since.  I am not one to wear perfume everyday, but it sure makes me feel feminine and pretty.  Funny how something so little can do so much.

Finally, I thought I would end things with one of my favorite songs in total tribute to the prior Fab Friday Newz meme, may it rest in peace.  I would love hearing your Fab Friday Newz... man I miss this meme.  So fun finding out the little joys that make your world go round.

Walking Again!

I went to the Dr. today about my foot.  I was totally surprised to find out that I can now walk without my boot.  Originally the Dr. told me that I was going to be in the boot until February so I was ecstatic.  I got home and first thing, I took off the boot.  I started walking but noticed this strange overcompensation from lack of the depth of the sole of my boot.  I got used to walking crooked and now my feet are even and it's weird. LOL  It is a little uncomfortable.  The Dr. told me tat it would take a while to integrate walking without the boot again.  There is a tingling sensation almost like I can't feel my foot when I walk, so I am a little nervous for the bad weather and making sure I don't slip on any ice.  Who am I kidding?  I am so excited I can hardly stand it.  Just thought I would share my little bit of good news.

Foot Pic and Progress

I went to the Dr this last week and they took a look at my foot.  They said it looked great, told me it was one of the best jobs they had ever seen and that the surgery had gone extremely well.  I took one look at my foot, and said... it looks disgusting!
They took the stitches out and gave me a boot.  They told me I will be on crutches for the next 10.5 weeks and then still in the boot for another 3 mos after that.  ICK!  I just wanna walk again.  I'm happy to have the boot now because I can at least take it off and shower a lot easier!

Lisfranc - Foot injury breakdown

The Lis Franc's joint is considered the tarsometatarsal joint.  This is essentially the joint between the
lisfranccomplex.jpgsmall midfoot bones (cuneiforms) and the long forefoot bones (metatarsals) in everyones' feet.  There is a Lis Franc's ligament that connects one of these small bones (the most "inside" of the highlighted portion, also known as the medial or first cuneiform.) with the second metatarsal, and typically this is what is injured in a Lis Franc's dislocation or injury. This ligament runs at an angle, when it is injured, the first metatarsal and some of the small midfoot bones can seperate from those metatarsals and tarsal bones normally next to them....This probably sounds like a bunch of medical jargon, and because of this, it is much easier to explain with x-rays and pictures...the one to the right is a normal foot with labels...It shows the "Lis Franc's joint", and how the alignment should normally be...

mech of injury.jpg

A common mechanism of injury in order for a Lis Franc's dislocation to occur is one in which the person is planted on the ball of their foot and a force is directed straight down the leg.  An easy way to visualize this is when someone presses on the break pedal in a car, the pedal is only on the ball of the foot and if there is a further force straight down the leg centered towards the heel, then a Lis Franc's injury or dislocation can result.

Post-operatively, it really depends on the severity of the orginal inury, but I would say typically it involves a hard leg and foot cast with no weight bearing for at least 8 weeks...On top of this there is extensive rehab which would take several months
